8 Weirdest Wedding Customs Around The World

Marriage, they say, it is a love affair chemically supported by nature. It is a process altogether, in which, two individuals weave their life together as ONE. And, for the universe to constantly evolve, marriage is essential.

It is one of the few things that most of the countries in the world have in common. However, the wedding  traditions and rituals vary greatly around the globe. Here are some of the weirdest wedding customs around the world that go beyond imagination.

#8 SWEDEN – Kissing Feast

SWEDEN – Kissing Feast

In a typical Swedish tradition, if either the bride or the groom leave the festive table to use the bathroom, the other one gets kissed. And that too a lot. So, if the bride goes to the powder room, all the females present for the feast will kiss the groom and vice versa. So, just in case you are getting married in Sweden, try taking some ‘ANTI-JEALOUS’ training sessions before the reception dinner.!!!

#7 INDIA – Marrying a Tree or An Animal

According to Indian Astrology, if a girl is born ‘Manglik’ or Mars-Bearing, she is considered to be cursed and may cause an early death of her husband. This fault can be neutralized by getting the girl married to a tree or a dog. If the girl is married to the tree, then the tree is cut down or burned up to break the curse.

However if she is married to a dog, she has to raise him as a pet and take care of it atleast for few months. We have a question here. Does the girl need to file a divorce against the tree or the dog ???

#6 MAURITANIA – The Bigger The Better

Ever heard of ‘Fat Farms’??? Well, you are not the only one, because we were surprised too!!! ‘Leblouh’ is the name of this custom in Mauritania, where girls aged between 5 – 15 years are send to ‘fat farms’ and are fed thousands of calories forcibly to fatten up quickly. All this is done because heavier girls are considered to be a sign of prosperity.

So, in one big part of the world, where brides starve and hit the gym to fit into their dream wedding outfits,  girls in Mauritania eat in large quantities to get those tummy rolls, stretch marks and overlapping thighs. But, we also came across a disturbing fact that the women are beaten up, if they refuse to eat. This has eventually led to many heath problems in the women of Mauritania.

#5 MARQUESAS ISLAND – Ooucchhh

In the Marquesas Island of French Polynesia, once the wedding gets over, all the friends and family gathered there, lie side-by-side on the ground to form a  Human Rug. It is a must for the newly wed couple to walk over them and only then can they leave the venue. We tried going through the history of it, but did not find an explanation for this strange custom. We would just want to give the bride a gentle suggestion – ‘Mam, we know its your D-day, but can you please avoid wearing those stilettos…!!!’

#4 CONGO – A Serious Affair…Isn’t it??

Usually, wedding celebration means fun and laughter, dancing and merriment. But, the picture is a little different in Congo, where the groom and the bride are not allowed to smile during the entire wedding ceremony. Moreover, we also came across the fact that weddings in Congo are very elaborate, i.e., they last for about half a day. The purpose of this custom is to test the seriousness of the couple’s decision to get married. Huh…now this is some real serious affair.

#3 RUSSIA – Cross Dressing

Russia comes next in the list with the custom based on dowry system. So, before the wedding,  when the groom’s family visits the bride’s family, they need to give some dowry and only then the bride can be presented. However, if the dowry is deemed insufficient, a ‘substitute’ bride is presented until more money is added up. This substitute bride may be a ‘Cross Dressed’ brother or friend of the original bride. We had just one thing on our mind…What if the groom finds the substitute bride a game???

#2 SOUTH SUDAN – Bearing Two Kids Is A MUST

The Neur people of Southern Sudan practice this utterly weird custom in which the woman has to give birth to two children. If she fails to do so, then the marriage seems incomplete. Moreover, the husband, then, has the right to seek a divorce. Another interesting thing that we found in their custom is that if the husband dies, then  his family must provide a brother to the widow. And the children born to the brother are considered the deceased brother’s offspring.

#1 CHINA – The Crying Custom

This particular custom is prevalent among the Tujia people of China. In it, the bride should start crying almost a month before the wedding. And yes, it is an obligatory task!!! So, as the night falls, the bride walks inside a hall and weeps for an hour daily. Ten days later, her mother joins her in the crying. After another ten days, grandmother joins the mother daughter duo. Sisters and aunts, if any, have to join them  too.

According to the elderly people, every girl has to cry at the wedding. If a girl does not cry, she is looked upon as a  poor cultured one. The crying custom, usually, embarks the wedding celebrations. Infact, there are songs that are sung while crying for the marriage. We even came across some instances when the bride was beaten up by her mother for not crying at the wedding ceremony.
