The Island of Dolls, Mexico (1/7)

Some kids love to play with dolls by dressing it, giving it different hair-dos but some love to tear the dolls apart. They would literally tear away their hair, take out their eyes, throw them away because they don’t look cute enough now, and then scream and cry for a new one (kids’ logic). You might just want to keep one or two of your favourites with you forever to hold on to those sweet memories of your childhood BUT would you ever consider hanging them ALL in your house? Probably not.

What if I tell you there’s an actual island where you would find dolls without their eyes, hanging around, unbelievable right? But it is true. According to local legends, the Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls) was created by its caretaker. He discovered the body of a young girl who had drowned, and hung her washed-up doll on a tree to pay his respects to the young girl. He spent the next fifty years or so adding to the number of dolls. Since his death in 2001, people have kept the place as he left it.
